What is PESA?
PESA is a procedure where sperm is retrieved from the epididymis (a tube behind the testicle where sperm matures) using a fine needle. A needle is inserted into the epididymis, fluid containing sperm is aspirated, and sperm is processed and used for ICSI. It is needed when there is blockage in the sperm transport pathway, vasectomy or congenital absence of vas deferens, or ejaculatory disorders. PESA is particularly effective when sperm production is normal but blocked.
